The Science of Lift: How to Calculate Total Thrust for Your Drone Project

Whether you are developing a compact FPV drone or a massive 50kg agricultural UAV, the first question every engineer must answer is: "How much thrust do I actually need?" Getting this calculation wrong leads to either an underpowered airframe that crashes during maneuvers or an inefficient system that drains batteries prematurely.

At TORGATEK (torgatek.com), we manufacture high-performance brushless motors designed for precision. Here is our professional guide on calculating drone thrust with a focus on real-world stability.

Step 1: Determine Your All-Up-Weight (AUW)

Before touching a motor, you must know the total weight of your drone. This is called All-Up-Weight (AUW). It includes:

  • The Airframe (Carbon fiber parts, screws, landing gear).

  • Flight Electronics (FC, ESC, PDB, GPS).

  • Power System (Batteries—usually the heaviest component).

  • Payload (Gimbals, cameras, sensors, or liquid tanks).

Step 2: Apply the Thrust-to-Weight Ratio Rule

To fly safely, a drone cannot simply have thrust equal to its weight. It needs a Safety Margin to fight wind, perform maneuvers, and compensate for battery voltage drops. In the industry, we use the Thrust-to-Weight Ratio.

The Golden Formula:
Total Required Thrust = AUW × Desired Ratio

Standard Industry Ratios:

  • Gentle Photography/Mapping: 2:1 Ratio. (If AUW is 2kg, you need 4kg of total thrust).

  • Industrial/Heavy Lift: 2.5:1 or 3:1 Ratio. (Crucial for stability in gusty winds).

  • FPV Racing/Acropat: 5:1 to 10:1 Ratio. (For extreme acceleration).

Step 3: Calculating Per-Motor Thrust

Once you have your total required thrust, divide it by the number of motors on your frame. For a standard Quadcopter (4 motors) with an AUW of 4kg and a desired 2:1 ratio:

(4kg AUW × 2) / 4 Motors = 2kg Thrust per Motor at 100% Throttle.

Why TORGATEK Recommends the 50% Throttle Hover

A well-designed UAV propulsion system should allow the drone to hover at approximately 50% throttle. If your drone needs 80% throttle just to stay in the air, your motors will overheat, and you will have zero "headroom" to recover from a sudden gust of wind.

TORGATEK motors are engineered with high-grade N45SH magnets and precision windings to ensure that the "Efficiency Sweet Spot" aligns with your hover throttle, maximizing flight endurance.

Conclusion: Data-Driven Motor Selection

Don't guess your propulsion needs. Calculating thrust is the foundation of a reliable drone. At TORGATEK, we provide comprehensive Thrust-Voltage-Current charts for every motor we manufacture, allowing engineers to simulate performance before the first flight.
